WFMW - Backwards Edition

This week's Works-for-Me Wednesday is a "Backwards Edition". That means instead of coming up with bright ideas for you, I ask a question and you come up with bright ideas for me. I like the sound of that.

So here's how you can help me. I'm all out of ideas. I need new recipes that work for this situation:

Two or three nights a week we have to eat dinner in shifts because parts of the family are gone at dinner time. I could really use some recipes for meals that I can cook for those eating at our regular dinner time and then put on the stove on low until my other kids and my husband can come home and eat. And please, kid-friendly recipes would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't have really specific ideas for you, but I would imagine that almost any crockpot meal would work really well - you might want to try crockpot365.blogspot.com for ideas. Most things crockpot recipes can be turned on low to stay hot for the next shift.

Ditto that--use a crockpot.
Soups sit well on the stove too usually (so long as they don't have milk in them...)
Another option is to do a casserole in two pans...prepare them both, then put one in the oven 30 or 60 min before the other one...hot food ready when people need it, but without extra work for you. Alternatively, just leave a finished casserole in the oven on really low and it'll just keep warm but not burn (that only works for about 45min)

Take some hamburger buns or bagels, top them each with a couple of tablespoons of pizza sauce from a jar, top that with a little shredded mozzarella cheese and some pepperoni (I also like to add some green olives).

Slide a few of them in the oven on 350 for about 7 or 8 minutes to feed the first shift.

Leave the others on a baking sheet, uncooked, until the second shift clocks in for dinner. Pop them in the oven and 8 minutes later the rest of your family is eating something yummy.

Check out www.allrecipes.com. There are lots of great recipes available for you to search through.

I have a category on my blog as well. Just search for "recipes" and "crock pot recipes".

Hope these help!

Here's a great side dish that's kept warm easily, is very kid and family friendly, and makes great leftovers, too:

I have tons of family friendly recipes on my recipe blog: www.homesteadblogger.com/mommaofmany. Since we are a large family, there is bound to be leftovers for those coming in later.

Chili

Soup with bread & butter - maybe salad

Stew with dinner rolls

Lasagna might work - but pcs may have to be nuked to reheat a bit

I like the 2 casserole idea - can be mac & cheese, or anything really.

Assemble-your-own paninis.
A big crockpot of soup.
Or a big crockpot full of meatballs in sauce, which can be spooned onto sub rolls as needed, with a salad in the fridge.
