WFMW - Kitchen Edition

Shannon is hosting a special WFMW today. She's asking for kitchen tips and ideas, anything that makes your kitchen run smoother.

Here's my tip. It's a pretty simple one. It's a way that I stretch drink mixes in order to make them last longer and also reduce the amount of sugar that my kids ingest.

Whenever I mix drinks from a powder (lemonade, gatorade, etc.) I try to use less than is recommended on the instructions. In other words, I mix it weaker than recommended. I don't make it a lot weaker - if the directions call for 6 scoops for 2 quarts I try using 5 or 4.5. My kids don't even notice. Frankly, I think it's because the directions on the drink mix call for more than is actually needed. Afterall, the company wants to sell more drink mix, right? Therefore it's to their advantage to get you to use a lot and use it up faster. Similarly, I don't use the full amount of sugar called for when mixing Kool-Aid either. And I usually add a little more water when I'm mixing canned frozen fruit juice.

Call me cheap if you want, but it works for me!

Check out Rocks in My Dryer today for tons of great kitchen-y WFMW ideas.

Bit by bit you are reducing their sugar intake too. Great idea! I like Crystal Light but ooh $$. Gonna try this.

I do this too - I always add 4 cans of water to juice instead of three. We went to my mom's house once and my 6 yo son tasted her juice - and said "Wow! This juice is strong like Superman!".

When we got married, my husband used to make kool-aid by pouring sugar in "until it looked good". (Yeah. It was pretty much undrinkable without going into a diabetic coma) Slowly I got him to actually measure, and now he uses less than the regular amount!

It's too strong if you follow directions anyway!

I've never thought of doing this for Gatorade even though I have cut down on sugar for Kool-Aid type drinks...thanks for the tip! =)

Great idea! I do something similar with frozen OJ. It says to mix it with 3 cans of water, I use 4 cans - makes more OJ and doesn't taste watered down!
